Kasevi Girls Secondary School is in Mwingi, in Kenya's Kitui County. It has 320 students. The school used to receive piped-in water two days a week. It wasn't enough to serve the girls throughout the week, and the school didn't have capacity to store more. "We were used to drinking salty borehole water that was so limited it barely quenched our thirst," recalls Mbuli Mulyungi, the school's Deputy Head Teacher. Then the Lifewater Canada team arrived and installed a rainwater catchment and storage system, including a 10,000-litre tank and hand-washing station, funded by generous donors. The tank is currently full of rainwater, which means there is no need to spend the $221 CAD the school used to invest in purchasing water from the borehole. The savings are being used to build a school laboratory. "The girls cannot get enough of drinking fresh water now that there is more of it," Mbuli reports. "I am so awed by the love and care we have received from men and women (donors) who are part of this project. I know people are doing what they can to demonstrate they care. We will do our best to show our gratitude. We will take care of the rainwater catchment system and enjoy fresh and clean drinking water."
