Yambyu Girls secondary school is an all-girls school located in Mwingi town, Mwingi central constituency, Kitui county. The school has two hundred and seventy-five learners. It was started in 1995. Because it is situated in Mwingi town, the school gets piped water from Boreholes in the small town of Mwingi, which then attracts huge bills at the end of every month, says the school principal Magdalene Simon. She says that being an all–girls’ school and a boarding school at that, sometimes the amount of water they use is off the charts. And for this school that is squeaky clean just from the look, one can easily tell a lot of water goes into keeping the high standard of cleanliness within the school and amongst the students. One of the problems with piped water, she says, is that water rationing is a common practice, and it is so erratic that sometimes it catches the school unprepared. That might not be a big problem in the past if they had enough storage facilities to keep as much water as possible when it is flowing through the pipes. "The good news is, it is no longer a problem because Lifewater Canada gave us a brand new 10,000-liter tank, giving us more capacity to store water. It comes with a washing station, the first ever in the school". With a smile on her face under the blue mask Abut revealed by her narrowing and crinkling eyes, Magdalene shared her feelings about the tank: This is all love. You see that tank, you see love. We love them right back. Harvesting rainwater can save the school a lot of money which then can be used to purchase water during the dry season. This is because they are willing and for a change, able to harvest 10,000 more liters of water.
