This fast-developing community battles with water scarcity as they also face issues related to safety of available water sources. An open river remains the steady and cheap source. People have drowned in this river several times. Some parents have reported their children getting sick from taking their baths in the river. The well we repaired is one of a number of dug wells in the area. As with most wells we have seen, maintenance is never factored into the drilling projects. During a visit to the location, one will notice a handpump covered with an old carpet. The Indian Mark II pump had broken and a very productive well abandoned. Our intervention here puts smiles on many faces. Members of the community could not hold back their joy as they freely gave sand and gravel to support the repairs. |
