A message from the community

Dear Sir/ Madame;

As the head of the youth in this town, I am happy to offer my thanks on behalf of all the people who now are overjoyed to have a safe water well in the midst of town. I know my sister is thrilled that she doesn't have to walk so far at least 2 times every day to haul heavy water home for the family and I also personally am grateful that we will not get sick because this water is safe for us.  No one escapes the time of diarrhea that we all suffer from especially when the rains come.

I wasn't able to attend the workshop but my mother did and she shared everything with us.  It was an eye opener to me.  We all were afraid of the virus because we saw many die of Ebola and know how fast sickness can spread, but now we are able to defend ourselves and keep ourselves careful to avoid its spread and infection.  Your timing with this information as well as the new well is truly an answer to our deepest need.

Thank you

James McGill

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

Situated within the district of St. Paul Monrovia, in lower Montserrado County, Borbor Town community registers itself as a low income community. It sits on the low land alongside a narrow path lacking access to a or a primary school. Access to clean drinking in Borbor Town  is poor. The population fetches water from unprotected rivers and traditional hand dug wells respectively. These water sources are not well protected from wild and domestic animals’ and human beings’ urine and feces.

People practice open defecation here which accelerates the contamination of water sources. Most population of the community suffers from water borne diseases. The extent of acute watery diarrhea epidemic diseases is more serious during the rainy season. The fetching of water is the sole responsibility of women and girls. In the H-H workshop it was revealed that women spent time in long travel period. They spent on average a total of 1 hour for round trip travel including queuing time. This time is spent in fetching water from unprotected water sources. In critical water scarce period, women were forced to stay half of the midnight at the existing water sources. Besides the use of unsafe water, the extremely poor sanitation conditions and very low level of hygiene education further exposed the communities to a variety of diseases and an increased rate of mortality as well as a negative impact on the ability to work due to poor health.

The Lifewater health and hygiene education was well received and the community in now in a better prepared state to deal with any outbreak of any water borne disease and more importantly stop the spread of Corona Virus. As such community dwellers were introduced to the most efficient hand washing practices using clean water and a locally made soap.  The access to the installed hand pump gives the community access to clean and safe drinking water all year round. Not only is the water available but it is also closer to the community reach within few minutes many thanks to Lifewater life-saving intervention.
