A message from the community

Dear Sir/Madame

My name is William Urey, I am the town's secretary.  On behalf of the chief and all the people I am delighted to extend our thanks and humble appreciation for you gift of a new well.  It is the turning point for our town and a big step to help us provide for our families.  No longer will we contend with constant threat of sickness from drinking bad water and we have refreshed hope that our young girls will be safer now as they don't have to walk in the bush to get water where bad things happen to them.

Your generosity has touched all of us but we see it as reshaping our entire future and the generation to come as well.

May God bless you all abundantly

In His service

William

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

This town is located on the outskirts of the Liberia Bomi Highway, far in the hinterland of the county of Montserrado. Korkai Town is sub-divided into six blocks: alphabetically arrange as A-F respectively. Korkai, as many locals mention is the name given to the Town by the Town’s first chief that led the town into a fierce battle against the conquered Liberian who repatriated from the United States of America. According to the locals, the settlers first overcame the nation capital Monrovia, however as their population grew they decided to expand their territories thereby annexing Korkai. Since then, Kurkai Town has long been a place for the strong minded people because of its cultural relevance that embraces hard work and family life.

However due to bad governance, Kurkai does not have access to safe drinking water and a life-saving clinic. Locals are compeled to drink from unsafe hand dug well, ponds and rivers.  As a result, the outbreak of waterborne diseases is often widespread in the Town. Additionally, women and girls of the Town are the most vulnerable since they are the ones responsible for collecting water. Typically in in their upbringing, women are expected to be either house wives. Women and girls traveled long distances to fetch water often times leaving them late for school. There is a high percentage of young girls getting pregnant early and never finishing school as a result.

This is cause for much concern due to the high rate of teenage pregnancy, as the Town lacks access to any medical facility. Those locals who are often sick from waterborne and related illness are rushed to the central nearby city of Browerville or Virginia if they must receive any medical attention. ‘‘Life is so hard on us, if anyone of us in this Town falls sick it’s only God that can save us’’ a tearful mother of six said.  ‘‘People in this Town work hard to feed their families but we can’t do all’’, The Town’s chief mentioned. The means of survival in the Town is center around farming, charcoal and other petty trade. ‘‘Farming and Charcoal burning is the only means we have to feed our family’’. A member of the Town’s council of elders explained.

Fortunately, by Lifewater timely intervention the Town today has access to clean water and more importantly equip with the knowledge to prevent any outbreak of waterborne disease. ‘‘As a community, we are grateful to Lifewater Liberia and hope they will continue to reach more communities’’ Mr. Paye Flomo the Pump technician said. As Lifewater drew her team from the Town, locals are left with the hope and were so glad that their girls’ children will not arrive at the schools later and they will stay in school and not get pregnant.

This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support!
