A message from the community

Dear Sir/Madame,

Ever since the establishment of our community we have had a struggle with adequate water.  Your provision of this modern handpump is very much appreciated and we are determined to take good care of it so it will last a lifetime.  Furthermore, your timely workshop taught us many things and we feel much better equipped to handle the haunting fear that COVID has had on many of our people.

Thanks seems to be inadequate for the immensity of what you have done for us, but our thanks you have in abundance everytime we draw safe water from our new well.

Remembering you always

Mr Lawrence S Mayh

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

This division is found at the far end of Lower Virginia and is the third quarter of Waterside. This suburb of Waterside has aroused from the growth of the old Waterside that birthed up after the Civil war in the late 1980 as a result of the migration of those who fled the rage of the war. It enjoys a perfect location due to its close proximity to reach community that borders one of the nearby city capitol.  However, it is far lacking behind in all the basic social servicessuch as a school nor a worship center.

Today, like everywhere around the country, the effect of COVID-19 reflects throughout the Waterside Community. The current state of emergency which insituted a lock down of the country economy. As a means of survival, livelihood in the community does mainly involve fishing, farming and some petty trade. Marketers in the ravaged township of Waterside receive their share of poor business climate especially the fish mongers ‘‘Your please beg the government to stop their state of emergency because our fish is always getting rotten because no more customer coming to buy from us,’’ a group of young female fish sellers told Lifewater H-H team.

Before the Corona virus epidemic according to locals of the quarter, Students of the community would commute to the nearby city of Browerville, more than fifty kilometer away to attend school. For those requiring medical treatment transportation would require carrying the ill person on motorbike and taxi tri-cycle for treatment. Normally family members usually put together their meager resources to pay for any medical needs of those who get seriously ill but now with the economy so terrible we are very fearful. Any families who cannot afford such expensive medical cost risk the lives of the love ones.

Most community dwellers in their search for safe drinking will walk miles.  Often children arrive late for school and women have to abandon their meager business just to get a bucket of water. A sense on relief filled the community when the resident of the community realized that Lifewater was actually going to come true on their delivery of a hand pump to provide the community access to the much needed safe drinking water. ‘‘This has come in the right time for our community’’ Fallah Ballah mentioned. Surely our living condition will be much better by the installation of Lifewater new hand pump. Importantly walking through the town, one could visibly sense the relief Lifewater's provision of the hand pump brought the community. As a means to better care for the pump Lifewater also train technician and caretakers and they are all respected as local heroes.

This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support!
