A message from the community

Dear Sir/Madame: As a whole the entire community join me in extending our thanks to all who really came to our rescue. Our need was great and has been for a long time, you have lifted the burden with this new well and blessed us, allowing us improved living conditions as well as improved health for all of us and especially for our children. When something has been with you for so long, like our daily search for water, it takes time to really become aware to what extent the changes impact our families. Suddenly, we have more time. Time to get to school on time, to market early, and we are already experiencing improvements in our health. Your hygiene class helped us to bring new methods of handwashing and better ideas of sanitation and I really think that is making a difference to our health already. It is our wish to make sure that all who helped with this work, know how grateful we are and be assured that we will value and take care of our new well. With thanks Siafa Boakai

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

About 929 people in this sector Situated at the far end of Brewerville city is the community of Sewegbeh Quarter two. Unlike Sewegbeh Community quarter one, Quarter two stretches far from central Sewegbeh into the back of the community over fifty acres of community land. Living on the edge of life's daily struggles, the signs of poverty seems visible in all shapes and forms within the community of Sewegbeh Quarter two as the livelihood of the community heavily surrounds farming and petty trade. ‘‘The means of survival here is farming’’ said a young lady of the quarter. ‘‘In fact, the lack of safe drinking water in our community presents many challenges’’ she further added. Every morning and noon, women and children leave their homes parading to nearby communities to fetch water from the only functional hand dug well that's now stands over nine hundred and fifty steps away. ‘‘The well that supply us water, dries during the dry season’’ one residents said. A hand dug well and a creek are the only water sources Sewegbeh Quarter Two has access to and inhabitants will drink from it no matter the quality. Often times due to the long hours spent in search of water, the time spent at school and more importantly at their meager businesses are limited. As a result, the community is left poor and destitute lacking access to life basic social services. Besides these struggles lies a very low level of hygiene education which combined with the use of unsafe drinking water further exposed the community to a variety of waterborne related diseases. Locals infected with any form of illness are required to travel to the central city of Brewerville to seek medical treatment as a result, inhabitants often suffer high medical costs, an increased rate of mortality, as well as a negative impact on the ability to work due to poor health. However, thanks to Lifewater's installation of a new hand pump coupled with the Health and Hygiene workshop this well project has shown a far reaching impact. This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support!
