A message from the community

Dear Sir/Madame.

Everyone looks upon this new development of a well in our community as a big step up.

With the nation struggling in the face of another health crisis, everyone is fearful and yet we didn't have the means to even keep up with the basic method of prevention that we learned at the workshop - to wash our hands often and well. How could we when water is scarce and so far away?

Now that is behind us and we want to wish everyone who has helped bring such a good solution, a heart felt thanks!

Your team were careful and helpful and still offered us training and instruction in how to care for the well and how to care for ourselves.

Everything is much appreciated.

Sincerely

Jemmeh M, Johnson

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

Population about 930 people

Situated at the outskirts of the Greater Monrovia basin, within the vicinity of Po River in Brewerville city the community of Sewegbeh quarter-5 resembles many communities across the West African nation of Liberia.

The access to quality safe drinking water draws the thin line between regular clinic visits and sudden death. ‘‘We don't have any good drinking water in our community’’ Mr. Kannah the community chief said.

The livelihood of only subsistence farming and charcoal production leave residents with many needs such as a primary school, clinic and more importantly a safe drinking source. ‘‘Many people have promised us a hand pump and fail us: because of this, we drink whatsoever water we can find’’ a mother of three, name Hawa, explained.

As a result, the use of unsafe water, the poor sanitation conditions and very low level of hygiene education further exposes the community to a variety of diseases which is becomes even more serious during the rainy season.

However, Lifewater timely installation of a hand pump in the community has automatically curbed the problem, thereby reducing the long travel and queuing period women and girls spend fetching water from unprotected water sources as of the total time frame between one to two hours a day to an approximate time period of five minutes.

‘‘We are thankful to Lifewater’’ Mary, a mother of four, explained. ‘‘We used to fetch water two to three times a day losing the energy needed to perform other household work’’. Similarly, girls are now following their education properly and they do not drop out and fail in their schools. Now there is never a critical water scarce period, when women were forced to stay half of the night at the existing water sources to be sure they had as clean a water to draw as possible when others weren't washing or bathing in it.  Now there is continuous access to clean water source with the assurance of a timely repair in case the pump spoils."

This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support!
