Disabled woman thankful for rainwater harvesting/storage system

The Jajemic Self-Help Group is a women's group in Kenya's Nakuru County.

It was started in 2012 by women who shared similar struggles and believed their support for one another would help them find solutions -- one woman at a time, one struggle at a time.

K22-T006a.jpg 4 MBA struggle the women decided to address was the scarcity of water in their homes. Individually, they were unable to raise enough funds to buy a water harvesting facility for their families.

Even as a group, although they tried, they could afford to raise enough money to buy only one water storage tank.

Saida Sheila is one of the group's members. She is a 26-year-old who lost her ability to walk from a disease when she was 10. In a wheelchair and living alone, Saida could not trek to the nearest river to fetch water.

Therefore, she relied on water vendors. For a woman living on less than a dollar a day, it was quite difficult to afford $3.32 each month for water.

Then Lifewater Canada donors provided the Jajemic Self-Help Group with a rainwater harvesting and storage system which includes eight 3,000-litre storage tanks.

The tanks are enabling group members to harvest water during rainy seasons so it is available for everyone -- including Sadia -- during dry seasons.

Saida hopes to raise enough to open a small jewelry-making shop -- expanding on the handicrafts she is already producing.

“I want you to know how much you have made my life easier by buying this rainwater harvesting tank for me,” Saida says.

“I don’t have to worry about water anymore because it is at my doorstep. I have enough. I am thankful for that.
