Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

Five schools in Mwingi region, Kitui county: Mulanga Primary School has 201 students. 19 students attended the health and hygiene class.Munyuni Primary School has 295 students. 65 students attended the health and hygiene class.Musikini Primary School has 490 students . 74 students attended the health and hygiene class.Musovu Primary School has 440 students. 32 students attended the health and hygiene class. Muthuka Primary School has 509 students. 40 students attended the health and hygiene class.A group of the most influential students were chosen to attend the health and hygiene class at their respective schools. The group is then able to effectively pass these life-changing lessons to the rest of the students, who by extension also learn from the health and hygiene program taught by our health and hygiene partners, Stada, a CBO from Kisumu, Kenya. The students learned about water safety; how to treat water before drinking. Personal hygiene was a very important topic to touch on as the team emphasized on menstrual hygiene and disposal of waste. Menstrual hygiene is very important for young girls growing up in this community because it's not just that most parents cannot afford to buy sanitary towels that costs 0.72 CAD for their young girls, but the region is so conservative that matters menstrual are deemed too embarrassing to be discussed out loud, making any conservations about it done in hushed tones, not loud enough for any one to learn anything new, if at all. So it was important and interesting topic for the girls who then learned how to take care of themselves and their environment during menstruation, but most importantly, they learned it's normal to have periods. For these students experiencing water shortage all year round, they got to learn other ways of using water economically, and for when they cannot afford hand-washing soap, especially for this community living under a dollar a day (hand-washing soap is a luxury many cannot afford), the lesson also touched on other ways of washing your hands without necessarily using a soap. Students from these schools that benefited from health and hygiene classes say they feel loved and thought of adding, " it is amazing that you take your time to spend a moment with us and leave us with life-changing lessons. We feel blessed."
