A message from the community

I, Mallam Abdullahi, the village head of Danzariya community, write to appreciate Lifewater organization for assistance in the rehabilitation of our long-time damaged borehole. Since our damaged borehole, the people of our community have been going to a long, long-distance place (stream) to fetch dirty water for drinking and domestic use. I shall be very grateful if our request is given due consideration. Yours faithfully, Ibrahim Abdullahi 07051976488

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

Danzariya, located in the Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State, experienced a devastating setback when their community borehole broke down, forcing residents to abandon their access to clean water. The breakdown plunged the entire community back into a water crisis that affected every aspect of daily life. With no functioning borehole, residents were forced to rely on the local river as their only water source. Unfortunately, this water was consistently contaminated and unsafe, creating numerous health hazards and practical challenges for every household in the community. The situation became particularly difficult for women, who bore the primary responsibility for water collection. They endured long, exhausting waits under the scorching sun, standing in lengthy queues just to access the contaminated river water. The desperation for water often led to conflicts, with frequent disputes breaking out between women and children over who would fetch water first, creating tension within what was once a harmonious community. The water shortage had far-reaching consequences that touched every family. Children arrived at school unbathed and wearing unwashed uniforms, affecting their dignity and social interactions. Women struggled to prepare meals for their families due to insufficient water for cooking. The scarcity became so severe that families were forced to reuse greywater from washing clothes to clean their dishes; a practice that compromised hygiene and health standards. Today brings renewed hope to Danzariya. Lifewater Nigeria's decision to rehabilitate the damaged borehole has restored not just water access, but community harmony and dignity. Residents can once again access clean, safe water without the daily struggles, conflicts, and health risks they endured for so long.
