In Dobi, a farming community within the Gwagwalada Area Council, many young women and girls face a significant challenge during their menstrual periods. The inability to afford proper sanitary pads forces them to resort to unsafe alternatives like rags or tissue, leading to health risks and profound shame. This often prevents them from attending school or going to the market when they are menstruating. Our dignity team visited the community to address this issue head-on. We provided essential education on menstrual health, explaining what a period is, how to prevent infections, and why menstruation is a natural process that should not be feared. The girls listened intently, with some finding the courage to ask questions they were ashamed to voice before. Following the health talk, the team distributed free reusable sanitary pads, a gesture that meant the world to both young girls and women. Now, girls in Dobi attend school with newfound confidence, and women navigate the market without worry. We didn't just provide pads; we empowered them with freedom. Their joy was palpable, knowing they no longer have to miss out on education or economic opportunities. For the women of Dobi, it's no longer about shame but about confidence.
