Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

Maje I community is a predominantly rural and agricultural area located in Angwan Lalo, Suleja Local Government of Niger State. The community faces a critical challenge: a severe lack of access to safe and reliable water. Situated in the northern part of Suleja, near the iconic Zuma Rock, the community's only source of safe water was a broken borehole, which forced residents to depend on distant or highly unsafe alternatives. This water crisis led to dire consequences. Community members were compelled to collect water from a polluted stream, shared with domestic animals, significantly contributing to the spread of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid. Women and children, who bear the primary responsibility for water collection, spend countless hours queuing, only to often find sources depleted. As one resident recounted, the impact was devastating: "Children began to have yellow eyes. People were getting sick. Even our animals were losing weight because there was no enough water to give them." The lack of access to clean water also traps residents in a cycle of poverty. They were forced to purchase water from vendors at exorbitant prices, diverting crucial funds that could otherwise be used for food, education, or healthcare. This reliance on expensive vendors, coupled with the constant threat of illness from unsafe water, underscores a significant gap in essential infrastructure and human dignity within the Maje I community. Recognizing this urgent humanitarian concern, Lifewater heeded the call. By rehabilitating their broken borehole, Lifewater has taken a vital step towards restoring not only the community's access to safe water but also their lost hope and health.
