Yatwa Secondary School in Mwingi, in Kenya's Kitui County, is both a boarding and day school with 184 students. Yatwa Secondary used to buy water for $269 CAD each month. Principal Simon Mulala says everyone had to forgo many important school needs to ensure there was enough money each month meet their water demands. So, it was a joyful moment when the school received a rainwater catchment and storage system from Lifewater Canada donors. The system, which includes a 10,000-litre storage tank and handwashing station, is enabling students and staff to harvest water during rainy seasons for use to during dry seasons. Because the region is so dry, Simon says his school still needs water. But it is saving an average $67 CAD each month that is being used in the construction of the school’s new kitchen.
