A message from the community |
Located outside the city of Brewerville, within the St. Paul River belt, is the community of Sammy M. Dukuly. With a growing population dependent on a single water source, when the community's pump spoiled, the scarcity of water left women and children traveling afar to fetch any form of water they can get their hands on not matter how contaminated it was. "To allow our children to reach their schools early, we used to wake up very early in the morning to go fetch water when the pump spoiled," Yatta Flomo, a community dweller explained with deep sadness. Besides the consumption of unsafe water, poor sanitation conditions caused in the community a variety of waterborne diseases. According to locals, they would lose hours each day walking to fetch water for the day’s tasks. And because the water was contaminated, residents complained of frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases. "I am very happy that this pump is fixed," a 10-year-old girl told the Lifewater repair team. "I will no longer get sick from drinking dirty water." |
