A message from the community |
Outside Liberia's capitol and most-populated county within the greater Monrovia district sits the rural-urban settlement of Duahzohn. It is a suburb of Margibi County near the Atlantic Ocean, and as such, it is known across Liberia as a fishing town due to the inflow of fishermen who migrated from nearby Sierra Leone. When the community's hand pump (on its well) failed, locals return to their old water sources. Those water sources are not safe for drinking and have caused the illness of many dwellers especially women and children. More besides, the unavailability of mass hygiene and sanitation education, coupled with very high poverty and illiteracy, fueled locals' inability to properly equip themselves to follow up on their health and hygiene. This exposed the locals to diarrhea, dysentery, and other waterborne diseases. Recently, through Lifewater intervention, the pump was repaired and the community is enjoying safe drinking water again. |
