A message from the community

Dear Sir,

I would like to thank you very much, on behalf of everyone here in this community, for the new water point that was planted here. It will make a significant improvement in many lives and in the overall health of everyone who can freely draw from this well.

Thank you and may God Almighty strengthen you all as you move to do more for Liberia.

Sincerely

Philip Smith, Village Chief

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

This Community is within Government Farm located 3 minutes walked from the Town Hall. It is a town that has different types of landscape but mostly sandy and was mainly established for farming purposes by one of Liberia's late President, William R. Tolbert, Jr.

The habitat of Quarter 5 is decorated lots of coconut trees around the houses in the Town. After the time of his assassination and the civil war, migration was imminent by displaced Liberians and other nationals (from like Ghanaian fishermen) alongside other Liberian fishermen from the nearby county (like Grand Bassa), who moved in and began their lives there.

Quarter 5 is large Community with a population of 700 inhabitants with mostly women and children. There is a school and for medical treatment, the sick has to go to nearby town to get treatment.

All these times, for years the Quarter has been faced with safe water problem. The source of water for their consumption has been from an open hand dug well and from a creek that is behind Quarter 4. The creek is about seven minute walk from the center of Quarter 5. These old sources have been managed poorly.

The only open hand dug well in the area goes dry during the dry season, thus leading the directing inhabitants with the only optional source, the creek, that is in the bushes where snakes are sometimes seen around and a slow running creek which is infested with bacteria from the floating waters that appears to be clean.

This condition has caused several outbreaks of diseases. It has been difficult for some older women, handicap and pregnant women to handle this problem of lack of hand pump. They have to pay others one bucket for L$10.00. To fetch water for them whether is safe or not they had no choice.

But now they have all cause to smile as The Lifewater Health and Hygiene Team and drillers moved into drilled and installed a new hand pump for their community.

The citizens expressed appreciation to the lifewater Family and Sponsors for the good work and pray God’s blessing.

This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support!
