Before and after in a Nigerian village

There are thousands of water wells in Africa and Haiti that aren’t working because their pumps have failed.

When the pumps fail, as they did in this Nigerian village called Roguwa, local people are forced to gather their water from creeks and rivers tainted by animal feces and other contaminants.

When they drink from these sources, children and adults contract potentially deadly diarrheal diseases. Someone – usually a child – is dying every 20 seconds in the developing world from diseases caused by dirty water and inadequate sanitation.

In Roguwa, Lifewater replaced broken hand pumps on four wells – restoring the flow of safe water to several hundred villagers.

“Our intervention has greatly reduced the risk of contracting diseases due to the unsafe nature of other water sources in the community,” our repair team told us. “The community expressed deep appreciation for the good work done.”

Below, a woman stands beside Roguwa's old water source, and celebrates with her neighbours its new water source.

Rehabilitating an existing water well, including replacing its hand pump and providing a durable new pump pad, costs about $1,200 USD. Its impact is priceless. Will you please donate today?
