 Project Detail Summary

In November, 2008, Lifewater Volunteers, Hank Makkinga (Carpenter) and Archie Hoogsteen (Mason), travelled to Liberia where they trained and worked with local tradesmen to build a 2,000 square foot operations base for the Liberian workers. This building containes two offices and a training/meeting room and now functions as the Liberian Headquarters for the Lifewater drilling program. The building was also designed so that it could be used as a safe place for volunteers to stay during future trips to train and work with the Liberian people.

In August, 2009, the guest quarters portion of the building were completed. This includes three bedrooms, a kitchen, and bathrooms for men and women. Air conditioning was installed to enable volunteers to sleep during hot dry season trips. The cost of fueling the generator will be paid by volunteers using the power.

The photos show cupboards being installed after tile floors were laid in the kitchen. The stove can be run of either propane or electricity. Each bedroom has a double bed and a bunk bed to enable up to 9 volunteers to be housed at one time.

These guest quarters will be made available to volunteers travelling with other non-profit groups to help Liberia rebuild after the long civil war.

   Dear Canadian Donors,

Thank-you for your generosity. I don't know what it cost you to give so much, but I can tell you that your blessing has been a real encouragement to us.

I want you to know that we used the money you donated very carefully. We worked hard to make three bedrooms fit for habitation, the kitchen ready for use and two bathrooms clean and functional for toileting and even showering. In particular, we made sure that the bathroom for females from Canada and the USA was up to sanitary expectations. The toilets are operating with water flushing and it is a great blessing to work in a place that does not smell like sewage. It is also very fine indeed not to have to run out into the rain to squat over a trench when my insides need to release. Thank-you!

I must confess that the kitchen and bathrooms are not sitting quietly waiting for the next team of volunteers to arrive, but is being used by office and field staff alike. The kitchen counters are high and easy to clean resulting in little problems now for ants, spiders, mice and assorted things I do not much like in my food. It's a great improvement to cooking outside on the ground.

May God bless you and your loved ones very much.

With thanks,

Bro. John Kollie
