Donors Help the Rural Poor Afford Projects

In countries where the average annual income is several hundred dollars per year, a well or washroom project costing just $2,250 is far beyond the reach of most people in need. For the poor living is cashless rural society, the cost may as well be $200,000.

War and natural disasters make the problem even worse, by destroying existing facilities, displacing people and devastating income earning potential.

The impact of having to live without safe water and sanitary toilets is most pronounced on the very young and very old. In Liberia, 25% of children die from preventable disease before age 5!

Donor funding covers materials and drill crew costs, thereby making the projects affordable for those in need.

Villagers have to pay some cash, provide locally available supplies and contribute sweat equity such as hauling water needed to drill, guarding equipment etc.
