A message from the community

Dear Lifewater & Sponsor,

On behalf of the people and the office of the Zone Leaders including the elders of Jerko Town Block 4, express our thanks and appreciation for a job well done. We received the Hand Pump as a token of Love and way of identifying with your concern for our lives.

We say thank you! thank you! and thank you! May the Almighty God give you strength and resources to help the needy with safe drinking water, not only in Grand Bassa County but elsewhere in Liberia. Thank you.

Respectfully yours,

William Jerbo, Zone Leader

Some community details (provided by our in-country partners)

Jerko Town (Block B #4) (population 920) is located along the Buchanan Highway leading into Buchanan City. Madam Rebecca Garpue, who is the assistant chairlady, said in a statement how this town received the name "Jerko Town". Madam Rebecca said, "this area way back was a very deep and dark forest. People were very fearful because of the huge population of monkeys in the area at the time. These monkeys would on many occasions chase the farmers, and they would have to run from their farms to escape from being attacked. People passing through this dense forest during the hot sun and late evening would have their belongings taken from the monkeys and sometimes get hurt". As the people started to move into this area, the monkey population decreased as they moved deeper into the forest.

The homes here were built on the hills, and to fetch water they had to travel to the lower parts to find the open hand dug wells. During the rainy season erosion would cause the filthy water to run down into these wells contaminating them with bacteria. Their children have been affected many times from drinking unsafe water. The lack of safe drinking water has been a major challenge for the community.

But now it is with great celebration for the people to have a completed well located in their town providing safe clean water for their families.

This well was drilled as part of a cooperative NGO initiative to provide safe drinking water to all Liberian's. Thanks to ''The Last Well Inc.'' for their coordination and support!
